Hey, Keith (Keef)!
Yeah. Hate to admit it. I am exactly that…53 years old and white.
But here’s the thing. I was never surprised that I can relate to your strip. What shocks me is that — as I can see now from viewing the KQED doc at your site, which I finally looked up online — you’re so young! I totally thought you were my age. Maybe a dude who grew up on R&B and was now totally cool still but at or nearing 50-something, somewhat settled in life.
It shocks me, not in a bad way. Just not what I was thinking from reading your strip. (Funny Times every month.) As I say, not a bad thing at all.
Hmmm. Has me wondering, though. Underneath it all, do you really have the soul of a 53-year-old white guy?
…just kidding!!!
As we all know, 53-year-old white guys don’t have souls.
Cheers!
B. (now even more of a fan)

Keith, ( re: Gang Sign strip)
Hey! Ho! Hullabaloo!! Happy Holidaze from this here Gentleman Cartoonist! It’s been a long and winding year, full of challenges and foolishness, ups and downs…
My top five:
1.Birth of my 2nd son
2.Appearing on Totally Biased w/ W. Kamau Bell
3.Having my whole fam (and the in-laws from Germany!) visit me here in L.A.
4.Pitching a TV show based on my work to networks
5.Shooting my first live-action video
My top five favorite comics I created in 2013:
-Nelson Mandela (the K Chronicles)
– Zimmerman walks (th)ink
-the week-long Eye-Watch series (the Knight Life)
-Okay..Let me explain why Ed Piskor’s Hip-Hop Family Tree on Boing-Boing is my comic of the year:
Piskor exhaustively researched all of his comic stories (via the internet) on the early days of hip-hop, creating this vast tableau that ties together an intricate web of creativity, cunning, and cool. What makes the internet so important, is that below each story, he includes videos of the actual stuff he’s writing about..so you see the real deal.
And if that wasn’t enough, readers can comment and post their own classic hip-hop nuggets. It’s a rabbit hole I’ve gone down a few times and have never regretted it. What a joy.
This book will be assigned in school and kids are gonna be psyched!
LETTERS/EMAILS OF THE WEEK..
Hi Keef,
I noticed your strip as I was doing the crossword tonight. It really got me thinking. It made me want to ask a question. Full disclosure first though: I am a white male who is transgendered (I identify female, but was born male). The reason I add my unique gender status is because I too feel the urge to ease those around me’s discomfort regarding my appearance and mannerisms.
To quote your strip:
“It got me thinking if there’s anything white people do to make blacks feel more comfortable…”
My question: What WOULD make you feel more comfortable?
And, if you feel comfortable answering this: Where does the discomfort stem from?
Sincerely,
Curious Girl
(such a loaded and great question! I am going to do a whole strip for the answer, soon…-kk)
