Meanwhile a black woman is sentenced to 20 years for discharging a gun(in the air) to alert others and stave off an attack. “Stand your ground” is white’s-only it seems.
Yeah, funny (read: not in the slightest) how that works, innit?
But don’t forget:
if you point this out, *you’re* the “real racist.”
Cause we’re now all “post-racial.”
God save us…
…because we’re clearly utterly incapable.
Amazing that one panel can capture the entirety of this travesty.
This acquittal is a call to arms – to support the call for a DOJ investigation, to join the activists who aim to change laws (like SYG combined with concealed weapons) that open the door to this – and this panel could surely be the rallying call
Not even slightly funny.
But it depicts the abysmal reality of our world. It’s all about power, politics and money. Common sense and justice are forgotten ideals.
I weep for humanity.
I’m now on my way to being an old guy, but this makes me sick because I remember being 17. I used to go for long walks at night because I was a loner and I didn’t have a car. Sometimes I’d be asked by cops what I was doing because being a pedestrian was unusual. “Walking,” I’d say. And I keep thinking how lucky I was that I didn’t walk past a tubby failure of a cop wannabe spoiling to use his gun.
I wish I could say that Florida will do something about this but I can’t yet see it happening. Florida isn’t the only state with its Legislature dominated by power-hungry right-wing idiots – we were just one of the first to go that way after the backlash to Clinton’s election. What you’re seeing in Wisconsin and Michigan and Virginia has been going on here for a while.
And the defense attorney did a thorough job dragging the kid through the mud. This is why I loath our court system that has nothing to do with objective truth and everything to do with emotions and game playing.
And I keep thinking over and over “He was a kid, for God’s sake!”
I grew up in Florida. I was there during all the Civil Rights battles and the Vietnam war demos in America. The right wing red neck idiots ran the place then. I left it in 1971 and moved to London (which has its own troubles, I’m not denying it). It’s sad to see that Florida still hasn’t basically changed. They’re still all scared shitless of black people. Thanks for the comment, Keith! Spot on, as always.
I’ve dealt with a lot of racism in my 36 years and I generally try to keep my head up, move on and stay positive but this……..it really makes my heart hurt.
What’s happening now with Zimmerman? Does anyone know? Has he moved? I think you should keep this topic alive with comic updates, Keith. Keep up the public pressure.

A travesty…
mgabrys, you nailed it!

I knew you would be able to capture this in the most concise way possible. What a tragedy and a travesty.
And mgabrys, you are absolutely right that “Stand Your Ground” really should be called something like “Save the Whites.”

Creepy white man wins again…
@#%*$#@!
I’m not saying the “verdict” was wrong: just the whole situation/society was wrong, such that the “law” is powerless/unwilling to fix.
For another brilliant view:

The defense did not use the Stand Your Ground argument. They used Self Defense.

I left FL in 2000 and came to the Bay Area with my biracial daughter before someone shot her for no reason. I’m sickened by this entire event.
AMERICA…the only country in the world where a black teenager can be found guilty of his own murder.
