Walking a batter because he’s good is akin to throwing the game. Every pitcher/team wants to believe they can beat the batter. By the time you’re in the world series you have to believe you’re the better team, and walking a batter when not necessary is a way of admitting you’re not as good as them.
Sox got it, fair and square, no deliberate walks, no hitting the batter with the pitched ball, no deliberate maiming of the basemen to prevent double plays. As a clean player and hopeful spectator, it was a joy to watch for all the above reasons and hey, who doesn’t love baseball in October ?~!
I’m a Cardinals fan (since I root for teams in cities that I’ve lived in – which means I also root for the Rockies, the Diamondbacks, the SF Giants, The Oakland A’s, The Royals and The Mariners – I think that’s all of them) but hats off to Boston for their win (even tho I have my opinions on the guy at 3rd base who interfered waving his legs in the air – that was just weird).
Why didn’t the Cards just walk Ortiz? Or is that against some baseball rule?
