I was super-bummed when I heard of Huell’s passing. When my family moved to California in the mid 80’s (yes, Huell has been on PBS that long) I watched his various shows a lot. The move was sort of difficult but I felt like at least one person was welcoming us to the Golden State with open arms. You will be missed, Mr. Howser.
If there is anyone who I’d want to give me a tour of Heaven and Hell, it would be Huell. “And what’s your name, sir? The Grim Reaper? Wow. Amazing. That’s an incredible scythe your holding there. Tell us what it’s like living here!?” He could make anything awesome.
He sounds like he might have been LA’s answer to Studs Terkel. I miss Studs in the same way–it was partly thanks to his nighttime show on WFMT in Chicago that we got over our feelings of homesickness and started to develop a real affection for our adopted home city. My condolences. The disappearance of a beloved voice and personality is a bittersweet reminder of a time in your life that is gone for good.
When I frist moved to Berkeley, I only had a few TV channels, so I used to watch PBS a lot. I didn’t know the area and I got hooked on California’s Gold. It allowed me to get such an appreciation for CA and develop a feeling that it really is an interesting place and my home. I’m really going to miss Huell :( It’s such a shame that he’s gone, they just don’t make them like that anymore!
I’ve been watching Huell for many years. I had an opportunity to meet him several years ago, but I was at work and figured there was no rush. Now, I wish I had taken the time to meet him. I had no idea he would be gone so soon. He always looked so healthy and had such a great personality………..he will be sorely missed.
Thank you for the wonderful cartoon on Huell, well done.

I miss him already. His shows gave me my California history and culture more than any other input, bar none.
Thanks, Keith, for doing this strip in his memory.
