The thought has been brewing in my mind that the last time there was this much economic disparity, one of the crime problems, we had was the kidnapping of rich folks for the ransom. The Lindbergh baby. The Leopold and Loeb case. The San Jose kidnapping of Brooke Hart (which led to the riotous lynching of the culprits in downtown San Jose). These were generally bungled crimes by dumb, desperate people. Well, OK, the Leopold and Loeb case was smart alecks who wanted to make some kind of point
Still, at what point do the under-rich realize they are creating an environment dangerous to themselves? Or, do they still believe as the one 19th-century robber baron said, “I can hire half the working class to kill the other half!”
I think the culture of lack of personal privacy and the fear instilled in every working person for their very security, make the Elite classes believe that they are safe against any social unrest (or reprisals in the form of personal violence and kidnapping). Sooner or later, I suppose, we’ll all realise that we have nothing to lose but our chains (and debts and fear)…
