yes, home schoolimng is forbidden in germany – and there are very good reasons for it. no kid should be teached about stupid imaginary freinds but not about science. no kid should be teached that a wife has to follow her husband but not about sexuality and birth control. no kid should be teached about weird paranoid conspiracy theories but not about the law.
and, last but not least: most parents are not able to help their childen with the homeworks – how shoudl they be able to teach them the stuff?
DrZoid shows the ignorance many progressives have about home-schooling. We had a nice circle of home-schooling friends, non of whom were particularly religious, all of them intelligent professionals. In our circle: two MD’s, a psychologist, three Tech professionals, two professors, several business owners, and so on. We facilitated the learning of science first, history as it happened and not from a sanitized book, art and music and dance, and so on. (You don’t “teach”, you enable and facilitate learning; every kid wants to learn as a natural response to their environment, you just open doors and help with the details.)
Every one of the kids turned out to be a high-achiever in whatever area they choose. Most went and finished college, some went on to grad and med school.
But I do love the “no kid should be teached” comment. And this guy thinks he can judge others regarding education? Ha!
I think we can all agree that many public and private schools do a good job, and some are not good. Homeschooling is just a smaller segment of that spectrum. The only thing I have heard some parents lament is that they felt their kids didn’t interact enough; not in the classes but in “kid activities” so they felt that was something to stay on top of. I would trust my kid with Keith or marksb because they sound reasonable and intelligent, unlike the doofus on our block with religious iconography all over the house and a knocked-up daughter.
Even as a cartoonist, you are going to get more salary than the average North Carolina Teacher.
My wife was born, raised and still lives in NC (I live in Hotel Rooms). And I stated over 30 years ago that I want to retire here.
When the Hockey Team first came to Raleigh a couple decades ago the team had a commercial with a couple of Hockey greats talking about Raleigh and the Triangle. It roughly went “Wow, this area has the highest concentration of PHD’s in the country” The comeback was “We are going to fit in well!”
Sorry everybody..My website is hobbled at the moment. It’ll be back to abnormal soon…
@ Hugh..Looking forward to seein’ the Kings and Bruins come thru!
Homeschooling has picked up an abominable reputation. That’s a fact, not the “ignorance of many progressives.”
Bravo to Keith for countering this bad rap, and bravo that there are lots of properly homeschooled kids in the RT.
But here in the Midwest and in the South, too many parents still use homeschooling as a way to avoid having their children exposed to ideas that might prompt the kids to question the parents’ proudly-proclaimed deliberate ignorance. When religious fanatics homeschool their children, the kids flat-out fail to learn what they need to survive in the 21st century real world.
DrZoidberg is correct: no child should be taught this way.
Obviously the good doctor is from Germany. His English is actually pretty good, and I’m shocked that a reader of this strip would demean him for the error of using “teached” rather than “taught.” Marksb should know that that’s an entirely rational way to construct the past form of a verb in English – but English is often an irrational language (as are many).
Isn’t it ‘home-schooling’ that gives us ‘smart homes’???

Holy cow! Dr. Zoidberg! How did you find our homeschooling curriculum?!
Holy crap, the K family is in the Triangle now!?
After you get settled, let us know when you get up to the Nantahala River!

Welcome to the area!
