*PSST..YOU HEARD IT HERE, FIRST!!

The Cartoon Art Museum is thrilled to announce its Third Annual Fundraiser with Pixar Animation Studios surveying Twenty Years Behind the Scenes of Pixar’s creations on Saturday, February 25th, 2006. We are offering pre-sale tickets to our past attendees for first crack at the latest from these animated geniuses.

As before the event starts at 6pm, gates will open at 5:30pm, with tantalizing hors d’oeuvres and appetizers in the atrium of the Pixar Animation Campus in Emeryville. In addition to the treats, guests can view original artwork by Pixar employees as well as pre-production work from their latest adventure. Last years additions included a story-board corner and the infamous online store only available directly at their campus. At 7pm the presentation will start in Pixar’s state of the art 240-seat theater with a new line up of guest speakers followed by coffee, desserts and a bit mingling with the Pixarians.

THIS EVENT IS ALWAYS A SELL-OUT. FOLKS COME IN FROM ALL OVER THE COUNTRY FOR IT, SO IF YOU WANNA GO, ACT FAST!! GO TO WWW.CARTOONART.ORG FOR MORE DETAILS!!

*EMAIL OF THE WEEK…

hey keith,

it’s taken a bit of time, but i finally need to respond to the toon
about the two diners here in cleveland
we were somewhat mortified to read it
no one here in the office goes in there anymore, since a friend of ours
sold it some time ago
tho one of my office mates had an eerily similar experience a few
months ago stopping in on a whim (she a white jewish woman and her
black musician partner and their 10 year old son)
“it was creepy,” said she
we showed your toon to our friend, the original owner, who had
previously claimed the place was cursed
this seems to have confirmed it for him
i’m sorry that this is the sort of lasting impression cleveland may
have on you…we struggle with our city on so many levels
i guess i just had to share that

regards,

s. in cleveland

*EMAIL OF THE WEEK…

I know you said you don’t have time to respond to e-mails anymore, but I just want to let you know that I like your work, and more importantly, WHY.

To give you some background:
I’ve been following your work for about two or three years, and I got my first collection late spring last year. I didn’t ask for it, because before then, I didn’t even know you HAD collections. But regardless, i finished it easily. I started folling your work more. Than, about two months ago, I got a second collection of yours, and this resparked my interest for your work. That is where I’m currently at.

I myself, am a cartoonist (or I like to call myself that). At the tender age of twelve, I’m not sure whether I want to draw cartoons, or action comics… hopefully both. I am constantly battling what to write about, but i know it will be political. I think that it’s easier to write silly comics during the youth, mainly because cartoons are only a page, therefore, don’t require SOOO much attention. I love drawing, but whenever I look sketches are ALWAYS better in the sketchbook, or as the doodle… basically anywhere except the actual piece.

I like your work, firstly, because of the format; the panels aren’t spaced, so you can easily flow through them. There are many words, but still, because of the big print, the words are really easy to read. You have a good balance of comic relief and politics, making it enjoyable for all ages. You also have a very important feature, which is that the picture follows the words, not vice versa. What I mean by this is that you make what you say the important part of the story, and the pictures the example, or the comic relief. You say something serious, or powerful, and then the picture will dipict it in a way that’s funny, therefore easier to swallow. Also, you have yet another good balance. Whenever I see something which is really happy, such as a little kids Little Red Riding Hood story, I’m sick to the stomach, thinking “That’s not real life, it’s just a sappy, sugasry version.” But then, when i see a comic like Optic Nerve, i think “Can’t we just escape real life once and a while?”( Now keep in mind, this only applies to non-action comics.) Like American Splendor, Calvin and Hobbes, and Bloom County, you succeed in having the perfect balance. Congratulations. I hope to be as good and inspiring a comic artist as you when I grow up.

Happy Holidays,
J.

*KONG…
Please keep in mind that I watched the original Kong on DVD (highly, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!) the night before, so maybe I’m a tad bit biased.

First, the good stuff:
-The monkey looked great!! Kudos to Andy Serkis (the dude who played Gollum in LOTR) for coming through again..Serkis also got to die the best way in the movie..
-Naomi Watts..Great actress..She can hold her own with Sean Penn, in a David Lynch movie, and now, with a giant CG monkey. Their relationship was handled well..
-The T-Rex sequence. Good stuff…Fast, crazy and over the top..But not too over the top as..
-The 1930’s setting ..
-The plane fight at the end kicked ass

The bad stuff:
Too long. Waaay too long. Mr. Jackson has now attained the position of George Lucas, where no one is gonna tell him no. If this movie was an hour shorter, it would’ve been great.
-The Brontosaurus stampede. Are you kidding me? That was just horrible abuse of computer animation. Someone should give out tickets for that.
-Jack Black. Even though they changed the character from the original to fit Black’s personality, he still delivered a lot of his lines too “Jack Black-like” *Bleah*
-The bug sequence was just too over the top, too. Using a machine gun to shoot the bugs off somebody?

Overall, I thought it was good..Not great…It had some spectacular sequences, but…I’d give it a weak three stars (out of four).

(If you haven’t seen the “40 year-old Virgin”..Go rent that. The funniest movie of the year.)

*AND JUST ONE THING ABOUT PETER JACKSON’S KING KONG..
Yes, I am completely psyched about it. I’ve been drooling for months. Everything looks right about it ‘cept one thing.

Jack Black.

Yes, I think Jack Black and Tenacious D are hilarious..But can he act? Can he not be JACK BLACK? CRAZY, ENTHUSIASTIC GUY?!! From the trailers and awkward voice-over, he still seems to be coming off as JACK BLACK!! CRAZY GUY!! I hope I’m wrong.
