ANOTHER LETTER CONCERNING THE CONTROVERSY….

The events of the Monday newspaper controversy made me sad to discover on
Tuesday the depth of the accident that the Daily Wildcat perpetuated. In
particular, I am ashamed to find that it was an accident and not a bold push by
the Daily Wildcat staff in order to bring such issues to the forefront through
what, effectively, is a clever editorial comic. So now, I find myself writing
this letter as a statement to Mr. Knight and the Daily Wildcat readers.

I’ll make a first level assumption that those readers that were greatly offended
by the truncated use of this derogatory term are also completely offended by the
use of the term in rap culture on a near constant level. I will also assume that
they are offended by the use of the term itself. I have not seen a single letter
taking offense at the generalization of white American voters being labeled as
racists even when voting for Obama. I certainly don’t take offense, as it is
necessary to get the point across.

What Mr. Knight does, and I applaud him for, is bring out the fact that
President-elect Obama reached across even the still existent racist divide. It
is only natural that in order to fully point out the existence of such racism,
that a term would need to be used. Without the use of a derogatory term, the
point of the entire comic is lost. If offended for the use of a term, I ask for
a look at who the audience is. The audience for the Daily Wildcat is students
and alumni who should be capable of intelligent thought on such a subject.
Instead of being immediately offended by the use of a word, I would have
expected many of you to sit and THINK on the point of the comic. Instead, all I
see is outrage at the usage of a word, as opposed to congratulations to Mr.
Knight for his portrayal of a message.

If the Daily Wildcat had printed this intentionally, I would be congratulating
them as well – for their denial of censorship that has started to become so
commonplace in the media. The real world isn’t perfectly nice and politically
correct. I’m sure Mr. Knight is well aware of that fact when he brings the
message of his comic to us. I hope that there is never a day when the papers of
the country try to hide our people from every harsh word and every inconvenient
truth. I hope, in the future, that such comics are bold pushes towards bringing
issues to a forefront, as opposed to accidents.

*IF THERE WAS EVER A REASON FOR NEWSPAPERS TO STILL EXIST…
..it’s days like this. Y’see, framing a screen shot of Yahoo proclaiming an Obama win doesn’t rock it the way the cover of the Chicago Sun-Times or New York Times newspaper does.

I went looking all over the hood for an L.A. Times so I can frame that sucker, but it was sold out everywhere. I finally found one late in the day, practically hidden away in my local cafe. Newspapers across the country sold more copies today, than they have in YEARS.

So..the key to selling newspapers is to have something extremely incredible and inspiring to happen. Unfortunately, the past decade saw an administration that thrived on the negativity, fear and bu**sh**.

*THE CONTROVERSY THAT JUST WON’T END..
With the joy of an Obama win, came the pain of a very unfortunate mix-up at the Arizona Daily Wildcat, an indie publication for college students in Tucson.

Instead of running the Life’s Little Victories Voter edition timed for the Obama win, they accidently ran the N-Word strip from a coupla weeks ago. Yes, the poop has been stirred up again–and this time I can totally understand why folks are pissed.

I talked to the editor on the phone and she apologized. Again, it was an accident due to a miscommunication between editor and managing editor. The paper is gonna run the intended strip with an additional apology to the readership.

Wow. We finally get to experience a positive piece of American history again. It’s about time.
I just wish some of the elders in my fam lived long enough to see a black man elected president.

I figured it would happen in my lifetime, but not this soon.

I asked older family members, and they thought they’d never live to see it.

The strips I did this week were assuming Obama would get in, just like what Garry Trudeau did with Doonesbury. I had only one editor ask,”What if he doesn’t win?”.

And what a joy it was seeing the likes of Jesse Jackson with tears in his eyes.

I coulda watched images of black folks crying all night long ( I also enjoy watching Extreme Home Makeover much more when they have black folks on it, cuz we faint and cry and scream like nobody else).

Bravo, America. We took a big step forward in restoring our reputation in the world.

*THE CONTROVERSY BREWS ON..

The Montclarion brouhaha continues to grow, with a ton of discussions going on about it on the web. Below are some of the choice ones.

http://ravingblacklunatic.blogspot.com/

http://www.baristanet.com/

http://dailycartoonist.com/

Here is an interview I did today.

I’m also throwing in some letters/emails of the week concerning said brouhaha:

Mr. Knight,
My name is J. and I am a junior at Montclair State University. I am also the Assistant Sports Editor of The Montclarion. As you know by now, a comic you created has sparked a big controversy on the campus here. When I first saw the comic, I was very upset.
You see, I come from a family where it does not matter your color, ethnicity, creed, sex, etc. When I was little, my first best friend was black. When I moved to a pretty white suburb, I heard the jokes about other races and it offended me, even though I am white, that is just the type of person I am. In high school, when more black students moved to town, I had to leave school early one day because the white kids were going to beat me up because they were calling my friends a nasty name and I told them, starting a semi-clash.
I got it all through high school; because I dress a certain way, listen to a certain type of music, I was called names so nasty and heard people say the nastiest things, you would just wonder “Why do they think like that?”.
I’m not going to pretend I know what it feels like to be a black person in America. But seeing my friends go through it everyday, hanging out in the city of Newark, a heavily populated black city, I see it. And again, I don’t know how it feels, but I do get offended. It would not have mattered if it was about an Hispanic person, an Asian person, a Middle Eastern person; it still would have offended me.
But, on the other hand, I do get what you were saying. It was based off a real-life event and it took a professor in the Broadcasting Department, the Department I am majoring in, to explain that even though these people are ignorant and racist, they still see Obama is the best choice no matter his skin color.
I was going to quit the newspaper yesterday after I saw that comic. I just think that the word is nasty, and it holds a lot of bad weight. I feel that if people on my campus heard your side, they might understand it a little more. Also, this isn’t even a black/white thing because I have dealt with more white people coming into the office or talking about how offended they were.
I know I have written a lot and I do not want to take up anymore of your time. I just wanted to let you know how I felt and I also want you to continue doing what your doing because what you are doing is educating Mr. Knight, though to some on my campus it does not seem like that. I hope to hear back. Thank you again.

Sincerely,
J.

Your shit sucks. It’s sad to see someone with no future like yourself going so low that you have nothing better to do than right racist comics, (which suck). You must have no life goals if this is all you do. I hope you enter the 21st century someday. I know i am not the first to send something to your racist self, but i hope i just wasted some more of your worthless time.

*POST OBAMA INFOMERCIAL..
Forget everything I said in that earlier post. The infomercial was right on target. Obama done did it and done did it well. Can you imagine Bush or McCain doing something like that?

Now it’s America vs. Election Fraud. Who will win?
