..I should be in Las Vegas this weekend. Dishing the dirt on how to be a big-time syndicated cartoonist. If you ain’t know about it, find out!! It’s $350 for a two-day forum.

*EMAIL OF THE WEEK..

Hello ,

My name is C. and I would like to thank you for work, it has helped me through the bad times allow me to explain.

I am from Colombia, South America (I hate it when people misspell it as Columbia) and as you may know most customer service call centers are no longer within the USA, but in India or South America, since I needed a job to pay for college so I found myself working in call centers for 2 years. The last one I worked in was heaven at the beginning; we could surf the net, listen to music, talk amongst ourselves and after one month of working there I got promoted to be supervisor, it could not get better.

Unfortunately my coworkers (I never considered them my subordinates when I got to be supervisor) got jealous. Most of them were over 25 and had been working at least a year and a half in the call center
industry, instead I was just 21 and had been in the call center industry for only 6 moths counting the experience I had from the previous job, so they talked to my boss and said they found my promotion to be a total offense since they found themselves to be better qualified for the job. So after 3 horrible months of gossip, bad attitude and fights, I lost my promotion and was back to being a customer service agent.

I thought things would go back to normal since I was an agent again, but I was wrong!!!. They wanted me out so they continued to make my stay unpleasant, I could not quit my job since I needed the money really
bad, to make matters worse after I got back to being an agent the new supervisor sucked, which led to poor customer service quality. So my boss changed the rules we could no longer listen to music or surf the web and they removed the card games from the computers, I was desperate I had no way to pass the time.

Eventually I found that google books was not blocked !!! Finally I could read and allow my mind to wander to other places instead of the horrible atmosphere at work. After sometime I decided to search for manga and using the key word “comics” I found out about your work. I started reading “What a long strange strip it has been” and I CAN NOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!! YOUR STRIP OPENED UP MY MIND AND I WAS ABLE TO LEARN, LAUGH AND SURVIVE MY SHIFTS, thanks to the fact I was able to get my mind occupied and did not lower myself as much as my coworkers regarding the gossip part.

So later I graduated from college and got another job so I decided to buy the complete K chronicles, I am now saving up to buy the th(ink) books lets hope I can get them by Christmas.

ONCE AGAIN THANK YOU AND I HOPE YOUR ART REACHES MORE PEOPLE.

Sincerely,

C.

Mr. Knight,

You make beautiful cartoons. I have been following your work for years now,
and continue to be impressed by your ability to tell a story. I am happy to
subscribe to Salon.com and I hope that my small contribution allows you to
continue to make a living through your art.

You have earned yourself a lifelong fan.

We’re gonna be in Boston for an indefinite amount of time. I’m really gonna be testing whether I can do my comics from anywhere.

Thanks for all the good vibes folks have been sending me re: my sick Uncle. He’s a rock-star and I only wish everybody had someone like him in their lives.

*DECATUR WAS A BLAST..
The book fest down south was all that and a piece of ham!! I did my slideshow in City Hall in the chamber where the mayor of Decatur and the city council have their meetings. It was excellent!!
Decatur is like a little Berkeley or Harvard Square of Atlanta. I suggest you check it out if yer ever down there.

*JUST ADDED: NEW BOOKSIGNING IN BOSTON!!
I’ll be doing another signing in the Boston area at Million Year Picnic, Mt. Auburn St. near JFK in Harvard Square on Weds. Sept. 16th, from 4pm-7pm. With a trip to the pub following.

*NOT SURE IF I’LL BE DOING THE EVENTS I’M SCHEDULED FOR IN L.A. AND VEGAS..
..stay tuned and I’ll let you know by the middle of next week…

*EMAILS/LETTERS OF THE WEEK…

Mr. Knight,

One of the things that has kept me reading *The K Chronicles* and *The
Knight Life* (other than the trenchant humor and incisive sociopolitical
wit) is your portrayal of family dynamics–much more realistic than *For
Better or Worse*. Your story of your Uncle Gene still makes me tear up
anytime I read it. (I saved it as an example of a truly great cartoon.)

Your ill uncle is in our prayers. God be with you and the family.

K. in MA.

Keith,

I’m so glad you were at the Decatur Book Festival.
My colleagues kept after to me to “go down to the McSweeney booth, go down to the
McSweeney booth.”

I bought a copy of I Left My Arse in San Francisco and I am enjoying it thoroughly.

I was working two booths down at the University of Georgia Press booth. Wish I had been
able to converse but the woman in front of me when I was making my purchase was going on
and on with a cellphone conversation while filling out an application for a subscription
so I just moved on.

Went to the doc the following Tuesday, took the book to help pass the time, and the nurse
saw the cover and said “ooooooo, that’s funny.”

Best of luck.
Thanks for all the good work you do.

A. in GA.

Hi, Keith!

Was flipping through the September edition of Funny Times, which ran your lovely cartoon about your life entwined with Michael Jackson. It’s the sweetest thing I’ve read since he died. I mourn with you.

Best,
A. in OR.

*LETTERS/EMAILS OF THE WEEK:
Re: VanGlourious K Chronicles
Cripes all mighty I can scarcely believe how much the salon commentsfolks lost their shit at your Vanglorious Nigras comic, when the movieit’s sending up is a critically acclaimed heralded whatever romp of murder.b-but those are *nazis!* Totally different situation there! *lives in a country built on centuries of blood and toil and slavery with a century of jim crow at the top*Anyway I’m sure you’re getting tons of sputtering ragemail today but Ijust wanted to let you know that was probably the funniest damned strip I’ve seen in a while. And I guess maybe let you know not all white guys are humorless ignorant fartlords.Okay sure most of us, are yeah. But. Uh. I forgot where I was going with this. COMIC GOOD.

re: Knight Life Comic strip about East Coast food
damn, your cartoon yesterday hit home. Whenever I head back to NYC, my culinary checklist includes: “real” pizzadunkin donuts (coffee and munchkins)”real” bagelsItalian ice (especially the very elusive orange flavor) and Papaya King hotdogs. Glad to see I’m not the only one with proudly retarded taste buds.
——-
I just got back from my Boston trip. Was visiting my folks in Framingham, have been in SF for the last 30+ yrs, but my 1st stop from Logan was to the North End for Lobstah roll, then Regina’s for a pizza to go. Fried Clams the next day for lunch. Were you following me?

re: the Knight Life
Hello-
I like your comic strip quite a bit and look forward to reading it daily in the Denver Post. I’ve never written a letter or email like this, but I figured that with any artistic pursuit it’s nice to get feedback from the audience. So here it is.A while back there was a Rudy Ray Moore reference in one of the strips—very nice. This and the general urban/ with-it feel of the strip seems to distinguish it from alot of the base drivel that they allow on the page. I appreciate the angle of your approach and the simplicity of the drawings. Also, the lack of comics syrup is welcome as well. Thanks for putting this comic out there. I’ll be looking forward to it daily, and am expecting more great simmering subversion and self-parody.

*I DO NOT ADVOCATE THE USE OF CHLORINE BLEACH…

Fargas, the Filthy Fork does. Lemon juice is a natural, non-toxic, inexpensive alternative to chlorine bleach. Use it and be happy.

*HOW THIS WEEK’S COMIC CAME ABOUT..
I’ve always enjoyed washing dishes. It was the first job I ever had. But I’ve seen too many folks over the years take on the task too lightly.

On my trip to the Bay Area this past weekend, fellow Marginal Prophet Jeff Kramer (Chernobyl Def G), was discussing an idea for an upcoming webisode of his foodie show the Food Dude. He wanted to do a show instructing folks how to wash dishes correctly. I told him I wanted to be a special guest commentator.

Anyhoo..I hope some of you print the strip out and stick it on your fridge. Bad dishwashing is what’s destroying America!!

*BAY AREA SLIDESHOW WRAP-UP..
Had a great time up in the Bay, where I did slideshows in Berkeley and SF. Apologies to the folks at Comic Relief who left before I arrived. I had to catch a later plane and didn’t land til 6pm.

Unfortunately, a miscommunication caused me to ditch my powerpoint slideshow and read a bunch of strips from the Complete K Chronicles. It turned out okay, due to the abundant quality beer that was consumed.

Shout-outs to Dawud, Kane and Co. and Big Irish Tom, who came over from SF for the East Bay show!!

San Francisco’s event the next evening was quite groovy. With Lev putting on a heckuva show and my Northern California fanboy, Dave, coming thru with the techs-pertise and making my powerpoint slideshow work without powerpoint. A hex on the woman who walked out before Lev when she didn’t think my slideshow was gonna work. A hex on you!!

Sold all my Complete K Chronicles and some original art! And thanks to the Lucasfilm dude who supplied me with my boy’s first official Star Wars shirt!!

And thanks to fanboy Dave for the Obama pillow!!

*DISTRICT 9!!
After gobbling down a bucketful of sushi, Jeff and I went and checked out the movie everyone is talkin’ bout, District 9. It does not disappoint. 45 minutes into the movie, I turned to Jeff and said “I cannot believe I am actually using my brain during a movie!!”

The wild thing about it is it cost $30 million to make the film (compared to Transformers 2’s $200 million price-tag!!)..I hope it makes a buttload o’ money..and I hope when they make the sequel, they try to keep the pricetag down.
