Can’t begin to tell you how PSYCHED I am about Treme, the new HBO series from David Simon, the dude behind the Wire.  In fact, NPR’s  Fresh Air devoted an hour to Treme, which aired on our drive back from Wondercon.  So I got to listen to one of my favorite radio shows interview one of my favorite T.V. writers about one of my favorite cities–Doesn’t get much better than that!!

Vice mag did a great interview with Simon, too.  And the wifey turned me on to the blog of Treme/Wire scribe  David Mills, who died on the set last week.

*WONDERCON WRAP-UP- The effect of having my daily strip run for a year in San Francisco was definitely felt at this year’s event.  A lot more folks came by the table..and many were kids and older folks…very interesting.   But I was kicking myself cuz I didn’t have copies of the new Knight Life collection, Chivalry Ain’t Dead (due at end of May).

The panels I sat on were fun despite some technical issues during the one shared with fellow daily cartoonist Darrin Bell.    It was about the SF Main Library exhibit Coloring Outside the Lines, featuring work by a number of prominent Black cartoonists.  It opens this week.

*SCHULZ MUSEUM WORKSHOP COMING SATURDAY- Cartooning is Serious Business will convene Saturday morning at 10:30am.  For 90 minutes, I will answer all your questions about syndication, self-syndication, publishing, self-publishing, web-cartooning, and everything in between.  I’ll follow up with a book-signing after lunch.  Head here to sign up for the class and email your questions to keef@kchronicles.com

707) 579-4452 | 2301 Hardies Lane, Santa Rosa, California 95403

*SLIPPERY ROCK UNIVERSITY- I’ll be headlining their Diversity and Democracy Conference with a slideshow presentation on Tuesday, April 20th at 12:30pm.  All you Pittsburgh readers should come out and say hello!!  It’s FREE and open to the public!!

Slippery Rock University, 1 Morrow Way, Slippery Rock, PA,16057
Phone 1.800.SRU.9111

Location: University Union Multipurpose Room

*LA TIMES FESTIVAL OF BOOKS-Upon return form back east, I’ll be going another round on the UCLA campus at the LA Times Festival of Books.  On Sat. and Sun , April24th and 25th, I’ll be sharing a booth in the Comics Section with fellow toonists David Malki (Wondermark) and Jose Cabrera (Crying Macho Man). Should be a great time!!

4/24-25  Sat/Sun 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.. Location UCLA 405 Hilgard Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90024

And on the night of the 24th, support the great 826LA by attending a night of boozin’ and schmoozin with the likes of Dave Eggers, Aziz Ansari, yours truly and more!  Wanna know more? Email me at keef@kchronicles.com.

*JOIN ME AND CANDORVILLE CARTOONIST DARRIN BELL..

..as we hock our wares in the confines of Artist’s Alley (table AA28) at Northern California’s largest pop culture gathering.

Along with the usual krappe, I’ll have some new prints to sell, including the K Chronicles Primate Change, Howard Zinn, and One Black Kid strips.

Plus: a sneak peek at the upcoming Knight Life collection.

We’ll also be doing a panel on Saturday about an upcoming exhibition that our work is in.  Here are the details:

3:30-4:30 Coloring Outside the Lines: Black Cartoonists as Social Commentators Featuring artists from the upcoming San Francisco art exhibit by the same name, nationally syndicated cartoonists Darrin Bell (Candorville, Rudy Park), Keith Knight (award-winning K Chronicles, (th)ink, The Knight Life), and Kheven LaGrone (curator of Coloring Outside the Lines) discuss their art.  Animated shorts by nationally syndicated cartoonist Jerry Craft (Mama’s Boyz) will also be screened. Moderated by Thomas Robert Simpson (founder and artistic director of the AfroSolo Arts Festival). Room 236/238

There’ll also be plenty o’ parties including the Cartoon Art Museum on Friday night, and Comix Experience on Saturday.

Speaking of the Cartoon Art Museum..gallery manager Andrew Farago  sez he’ll shave a Batman logo into his head if folks will donate to the C.A.M.  There’s only one week left in the fundraiser..They only need $3000 to put em over the top and send Andrew to the barber’s chair.

*SCHULZ MUSEUM WORKSHOP..
Hey!!  I’m teaching a workshop at the world famous Charles Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa on Saturday April 17th.  I’ll be talking all about the perils of syndication, self-syndication, and going web-exclusive.  There’s only a limited amount of folks who can attend, so I suggest signing up sooner than later.  Go here.

*LISTEN TO ME ON FCCFREERADIO.COM ON SUNDAY (MAR.28TH)..

–at 12:30pm Pacific for an interview.  Or 107.3 fm if you’re in town.

*LETTER OF THE WEEK

Hi Mr. Knight,
I am in eighth grade and am working on a National History Day project. I am doing a documentary about how innovative Morrie Turner and “Wee Pals” were during the Civil Rights era. While doing research, I found your “Soul Corner” tribute to Morrie’s 45th anniversary. I think it is great and would love to use it along with a strip Morrie drew about Rainbow Power as the last image in my video — before of course the credits. If you give me permission to use it, I will include a caption stating it was drawn by you. Also you will be mentioned in the credits.
Just so you know, this project is a competition that has three levels — district, state, and nationals. How far I will get — who knows — but I’m hoping to make it all the way.

Thank you in advance,

K.

(Cool!!  I’ll keep you up-to-date on how K. does with his doc!-kk)

Some of you may remember the K Chronicles comic that caused an uproar on the campus of Slippery Rock University.

Turns out the editor of the school newspaper, Josh Rizzo, has won a journalism award from the Society of Collegiate Journalists,  for defending his right to run the comic.  I’m looking forward to congratulating him in person when I speak at the school on April 20th.

You can read about it here.

EMERALD CITY COMIC CON/SEATTLE WRAP-UP

Back from a week in Seattle visiting ye evil twin sis and guesting it at the Emerald City Comic Con.

Our visit got off to a rough start when the Incredible Cuteness of Being got mischievous during a diaper change and rolled across my sister’s bed, creating an effect not dissimilar to screen printing.

But I was excited to hang with my good comics pal Steve Notley, Canadian Seattlite, and creator of Bob the Angry Flower. He works at videogame co. Popcap. And I was invited to their offices to get my ass summarily kicked at Foosball by a coupla Popcappers.

I got beat so bad that I dreamt I was a soccer goalie and I was continually letting simple shots get past me.   I was being cussed out in several different languages, courtesy of my teammates and fans.

At some point I realized the refs moved my goal from out behind me.  And when I saw another shot go in I blamed the refs for moving the net.  It was quite traumatizing.

*EMERALD CITY CON WRAP-UP

Besides dropping the heaviest thing I was carrying on my toe, I had a fun show.  I had no new books (which is a big no-no if you want to make scratch), but enough folks came through to make it interesting.

This con continues to grow and it’s easy to see why.  It’s become the go-to con for many web-cartoonists.  Swell folks like Meredith Gran, Rich Stevens, the fellas at Halfpixel and many, many more.

For the 2nd year in a row, I was parked next to Daneille Corsetto (Girls with Slingshots), and she was outta books by early Sunday!!  I also got to meet Kate Beaton (Hark!  A Vagrant), whose work was given to me by a mutual fan at APE2009.  Funny, smart stuff.  Glad the two of them won Lulu Awards.

Steve and I went for some sushi at Blue C Sushi where they were showing Godzilla movies on the wall.  And then fer some killer pinball at some dive that was most righteous.

*THE KNIGHT LIFE IN THE SEATTLE TIMES?

While I was up there, I had a meeting at the Seattle Times in an attempt to get my daily strip into the paper.  I think it went well and suggest that every one of you Seattle area readers–go to the Times website and fill out the online comics survey–and suggest the Knight Life!!  But please–ONLY SEATTLE AREA READERS!! They’ll toss out folks who fill it out who don’t live in the area.

*RETURN OF DIRT, SOIL AND HUMMUS!!

Anyone familiar with the K Chronicles from back in the day know of my college friend Amanda’s band o’ triplet babies, Dirt, Soil and Hummus.  Welp, they’re all grown up and on their way to high school in Seattle!!  I hope to do an update strip on them sometime in the near future.  My boy points to their Christmas card and not only names the triplets, but also their two younger brothers: Tofu and Soybean.

We had a great time up there..Seattle is inched up the ladder on the “cities we might move to after L.A.”  list.

*UPCOMING: WONDERCON IN SAN FRANCISCO!! (Apr. 2-4 at Moscone Center South)

I’ll be in artist’s alley with a very special guest at my table: Darrin Bell, the artist behind Rudy Park and creator of Candorville!! Come on by and ask which one of us is the creator of the Boondocks.

This was given to me by a reader up in Seattle.
