Not sure what prompted it, but I found myself looking up one of my favorite pop bands ever: Jellyfish.  They were based in San Francisco and  blew up in the early to mid-nineties when I was putting in time in the city by the Bay.

If you dig the Beatles, the Beach Boys, XTC and the like, you probably know these fellas.  If not, WTF?

They were never as big in the States as they deserved to be, but they were around long enough to leave us some neat stuff to listen to.

As great as they were on record, they were even better live.  Rarely do you see the vocal and instrumental skills displayed here in these live versions of some of my favorite J-Fish songs:

Anyhoo..So me and the fam are shopping at Whole Fools this afternoon in Venice and this long -haired dude walks by us, and it’s Roger Manning, the keyboardist from Jellyfish!!

Talk about serendipity!  I just started listening to their music again..and there he is.

I tried to chase him down, but I was saddled with child.  He escaped before I could go all fanboy on him.

Anyway..All of the members have gone on to create more great music, but I hope they’ll eventually get back together for a reunion tour.  Feh!! Who am I kiddin’?   America doesn’t deserve it!!

RE: Random Acts of Cuteness (the K Chronicles)

Thanks for the great strip!  I’ve been reading it since I was in college in
the early ’90’s.  We happen to have our own unbearable cuteness of being,
who is 2, and does most of the same things your boy does.  Random acts of
bottomlessness, complete with jumping up and down while watching the boy
parts jiggle, is definitely a favorite. Making everything in the house into
weapons and flirting with females of all ages is quite popular.  We also
have a very, very funny and very “liberated” 6 year-old, who draws pics of
princesses using their “princess guns” to shoot snakes.  She’s been known to
use her dart gun to fire warning shots when she gets into bed at night to
scare away the monsters.  I’ve attached the pic she drew of the princess
shooting the snake.  Life’s Little Vic:  When your kid is secure enough to
chase away her own monsters. :D

Yours truly, A.

Keith~
Love your ‘toons. I’ve been reading them for years. I have a Q for your FAQ’s which obviously hasn’t been A F enough:
When and where did “K Chronicles” first get published?
Nobody even remotely close to here carries “The Knight Life” so I’ve been catching up with them online and forwarding many to friends and family. Keep up the great work. I thoroughly enjoy it.
~W.

(the k chronicles in it’s current incarnation, were first printed in the “local color” section of the san francisco bay guardian in 1992–the s.f.weekly picked it up and ran it regularly about a year later.  but an early incarnation ran in my college newspaper, the log (as in ship’s), at salem state college (now university) starting in 1985.-kk)

Dear Keith,

I read your comic in the San Diego Union Tribune and like it very much.  I
was particularly touched by a Sunday strip some time ago where the character
relates going to the home of a deceased soldier and discovering he was gay –
his anguish at not knowing something so important was just really well done.
Today on Facebook a friend linked an article from Andrew Sullivan with a
very similar story.

Is there an online link to that particular comic?  I’d like to post it in
reply because I just thought the comic got the point across more effectively
than the written word.

Thank you!

Peace,

G.

re:”More Whining From the Left” (Knight Life)

Hello Mr. Knight,

Today’s strip talked about left-handed issues. I’m surprised you
didn’t mention the fact “sinister” is Latin for “left-sided” or
left-handed
http://www.anatomy.usyd.edu.au/glossary/glossary.cgi?page=s

Interesting that a word which meant nothing more than “left-handed”
came to be redefined to mean evil!

Your comments hit close to home. I myself am right-handed but my
wife’s family is brain-washed into believing evil things about
left-handed people. Her mother had 4 kids, and drilled into the older
children that if they handed a younger child a cup and that child
reached out with their left hand to take the cup, they were to take
the cup back and purposefully present the cup to the child’s right
hand… for fear the child would grow up to be left-handed. There are
other such stories.

Thanks for the strip, they’re quite enjoyable!

Best regards,

T.

Hey kids..SPX was wonderful. By now you’ve read about the highlights, but I’ve gotta attach this video cuz it’s cool:

The highlight that continues to stand out is viewing Ollie Harrington’s work. There were a coupla pieces in there that he did while living in Germany (he moved there to escape American racism).

It made me think of all the great African American artists that left for Europe.  Hendrix, Baldwin, Wright, Baker–the list goes on and on. I sometimes wonder if I’ll find myself living in Germany one of deez daze…

Very special thanks to my D.C. hype-man Warren Bernard, who takes over the reins of SPX next year!  Good luck, mah man!!

The next few signings: New York Comic Con 10/8 & 9, Denver 10/11, and San Francisco (APE) 10/16 & 17..

I caught this great animated short a few weeks back.  If you ain’t feelin’ it, you’re one jaded em-effa!!

SPELLING BEE WRAP-UP

Thanks to everyone who donated to my Team Sweaty Ham at the first annual 826LA Spelling Bee for Cheaters. We did extremely well for jumping into the fray with only one week of fund-raising left.  Thanks to you, we had $1700 worth of cheats, and we used them quite effectively (though not effective enough to win).

The bee was run by the judges of the Putnam County Spelling Bee, a Tony Award winning play I saw a few years back that was hilarious.  I think it was actually a few of the same actors I saw back in San Francisco.  They introduced each speller with some strange, hilarious fact  (“Spike Jonze looks white, but he is actually the love-child of Spike Lee and Quincy Jones”) and the way they used spelling bee words in a sentence were consistently funny all through the show.

The event, which featured Jimmy Kimmel, Spike Jonze, Dianna Agron (from Glee), Dave Eggers and SNL’s Laraine Newman spelling onstage, raised nearly $70,000 to help kids in the LA area with their creative writing skills. Bravo!!

I was also happy to compliment Mr. Kimmel on the show he did on a Santa Monica bus.  Seriously!!  It picked up people as he was doing the show!  He said the ratings weren’t so good.. and guest Paula Abdul was in tears before and after she got on the bus… but it made for great television!!  Check it out below:

SCOTT PILGRIM

So, yeah–Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is gonna be the biggest thing since sliced bread  and deservedly so.  I got the same feeling from the trailer that I got when I first saw the American Splendor trailer. Someone took another  indie, non-superhero thing and done good by it.

Anyway..Here’s a clever mash-up of the comic and the movie trailer:

WEDDING ANNIVERSARY #8/MOVIES THAT DESERVED BETTER

Celebrated 8 years of matrimony this past weekend with a trip to Topanga Canyon and brunch at the Inn of the Seventh Ray. We had a table outside, close to a stream as yoga studio music played in the background. Very pleasant, very hippie/healthy, very costly, very Southern California.

I thought it was called Inn of the Seventh “Veil” when I was looking for directions.  Turns out that’s a strip joint on Sunset.

Our anniversary ended with wine and a screening of Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous.  The film played a large role in courting the wifey back in San Francisco.  I tried to tell this to Mr. Crowe when I met him, but my mind blanked on the name of the film, resulting in me telling Mr. Crowe that I would not tell him which of his movies was crucial in securing said wife.  (it was a really weird exchange.)

Anyway–it’s a great film (what the hell happened with Kate Hudson’s career?), but it didn’t do well at the box office, which got me to thinking of great films that didn’t make any $$$ but deserved to. My top three:

1.Almost Famous– Everything’s great about this flick. The actors. The music.  The Eastern Airlines plane. The only thing they got wrong was the black kid’s hairstyle in the mom’s classroom.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycu7cP-rp-U&feature=related

2.The Iron Giant-I was just talking to an animator that worked on this film at Comic-Con.  This was so good that a politician begged on the floor of Congress for people to see it (to no avail).

http://www.avclub.com/articles/the-iron-giant,26074/?utm_campaign=feeds&utm_medium=RSS&utm_source=avclub_rss_daily

3.Children of Men-By the director who made the only Harry Potter movie I could recommend.  This is another flick with so many really good actors and GREAT shots.
