Had a great time at the American Library Association’s annual convention, this year taking place just down the road in Anaheim.  Reconnected with a lot of folks, including Bay Area homeslice Adam Mansbach, librarian rock-star Amy Cheney, fellow autobio toonsters Amy Martin and Gabrielle Bell, and, unbeknownst to ye, fellow Angeleno Derek Kirk Kim.

Had a fun slideshow presentation on Sunday with Jason Shiga, whose tech issues resulted in him hilariously recounting his romantic adventures that led to his graphic novel Empire State.   Great stuff.

I like librarians.  They appreciate books.  They appreciate comics.  They’re smart.  I hope to be doing some slideshows at a library near you!

An interview I did at the convention:

*THE NEW K CHRONICLES COLLECTION IS AT THE PRINTER!!

Sorry for all the comic strip repeats, but I’ve been burning the midnight oil putting together the brand new K Chronicles collection the Incredible Cuteness of Being. This collection was by far the hardest one to put together.  A lot of the strips had to be tweaked and cleaned up because they were drawn so poorly.  Especially the ones right around when my kid was born, and my daily strip was launched… I was getting NO sleep whatsoever.  It was harsh.

That being said, I believe  it is by far my strongest book to date.  Comics covering the birth of said cuteness of being, the election of the nation’s first Black president, the recession..and so much more.   Also included are strips never before seen.  The book will be premiering at this year’s Comic-Com in San Diego. You’ll be able to pre-order on the site soon.

*TELL ALL YER LIBRARIAN FRIENDS!! KEEF AT ALA IN ANAHEIM IN THIS WEEKEND!!

I love librarians.  I used to be one for workstudy in college!  I will be returning to the largest gathering of librarians in the U.S., the ALA Convention in Anaheim, this weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center (where Wondercon took place at coupla months ago).

I’ll have a table in Artist’s Alley.  It many not say it on the event’s website yet, but I will be there. I’ll be discounting my stuff to help offset the financial mess public libraries face, so come on by!! I’ll also be doing a portion of my world famous slideshow on Sunday at 10:30am on the Graphic Novel stage, I believe.  Details below (though no sign of location)

Yeah–haven’t blogged in a looong time.

Full moon in Myrtle Beach!!

MYRTLE BEACH WRAP-UP!!

The one thing I learned from my trip is NEVER FLY SPIRIT AIRLINES!! You think you’re getting a good deal, but what you’re doing is rolling a pair of rather shady dice.  I knew I was in for something when I arrived at their counter at LAX and found something akin to a Big Lots going out of business extravaganza.

I survived and made it to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.   Land of the most elaborate miniature golf courses I have ever witnessed, and many, many, many pancake houses. I was invited out there by the Weekly Surge newspaper as a special guest at X-Con, the local comic book convention.  It had everything!  A wrestling ring!  Rocky Horror Picture Show performance! Margot Kidder (very nice, by the way)! And, inexplicably, a Buffy the Vampire Slayer lip-sync performance!

Highlights: Closing down the Sun City Cafe , discovering a popular local newspaper that consists only of mugshots, my artwork featured on the cover of the Surge along with an interview and much praise from fine editor Kent Kimes :

Hole in the wall restaurant Mr. Fish (with the great t-shirt: “If it smells like fish, eat it!”), right next door was the Fresh-Brewed coffeehouse (art, coffee, library and performance space!), my slideshow at Palmetto Studios/Corsair Comics alongside a burlesque show, and last, but not least: the crazy miniature golf courses!!

Thanks to Kent, Abby, Derrick, Diana,  for making it happen!

I’LL BE UP IN SAN FRANCISCO, THIS THURSDAY, 5/31/12

I’ll be sitting on a panel with the great Morrie Turner (Wee Pals),  showing some slides, and talking trash at San Francisco’s Museum of the African Diaspora. The event is called Black Ink, and I plan on spilling it all over 3rd St. and Mission, where the museum is located.  I’m psyched to be there as a guest, and happy that Andrew Farago, good pal, the savior of my Kickstarter campaign, and  gallery manager of the Cartoon Art Museum, will be monitoring.

You can score tickets to the event here.

NEW PREQUEL-DENIER  BUMPER STICKER AVAILABLE IN THE STORE!

I really felt I wasn’t doing enough to promote my burgeoning Star Wars Prequel-denial movement, so I came up with this spiffy bumper sticker to show the world that it’s okay to shut out traumatizing experiences and pretend they don’t exist.  Get yours today!!

*So check it out: I was watching the new Morgen Spurlock documentary show, A Day in the Life,  on HULU. And it was featuring one of my favorite rap groups these days, Das Racist, when I realized, I know one of the rappers in the group!

That’s me and Victor Vazquez, aka Kool A.D.  He interviewed me on Youth Radio in Berkeley back in the day.  (he was so young and innocent then)

*I was featured in Michael Cavna’s blog on the Washington Post website about my Kickstarter success.

*A very interesting in unique interview I did: http://theverygoodbadcomedyshow.thecomicseries.com/comics/pl/186038
