So, OK, strictly speaking Big Papi is Dominican American, but should he not count as African-Dominican American? cf. your cute little “Quintin Berry is the only African American” link. Not that this contradicts your essential point. Just sayin’.
P
I would count him as black (Xander Bogaerts too!), but culturally-speaking, the article was about how black kids in the United States aren’t playing baseball anymore. They’re being steered towards football and basketball.
@Patricia – the DR (or LRD) is indeed a part of the Americas, and Ortiz’s lineage goes back to Africa – ergo he is African American – in the US people would probably refer to him as ‘black.’ Further, the nationality from which he originates and the language that he speaks has very little bearing on what race he, or other people, identifies with. This is why Latino/Hispanic is slowly being moved out of the ‘race’ category on census, university and job applications, and other demographic indicators, and moved into its own category.
That said, Ortiz is a model that many other athletes should strive to emulate.
