SLIPPERY ROCK EDITOR WINS AWARD FOR DEFENDING K CHRONICLES
Some of you may remember the K Chronicles comic that caused an uproar on the campus of Slippery Rock University.
Turns out the editor of the school newspaper, Josh Rizzo, has won a journalism award from the Society of Collegiate Journalists, for defending his right to run the comic. I’m looking forward to congratulating him in person when I speak at the school on April 20th.
You can read about it here.

I thought the cartoon was great, but what concerns me is the whole “Freedom of Speech” aspect of the arguments in order to defend it. I’m all for Freedom of Speech, but the argument is usually used when you are defending something so disgusting and vile that you have nothing else to stand on.
“Sure, that cartoon of Keith’s was vile and disgusting, but …uh… we have to permit free speech even when very reasonable people find it utterly repulsive. Besides, I was personally assured by the cartoonist that the kitten in question is above the age of consent.”
The cartoon is about racism and how we pretend it doesn’t exist, so we can practice it. How is the hell is that racist? What is crazy is that the student chapter of the NAACP and Black Action Society were holding the protests.
I like the quote: “We don’t care if it was a black, white, orange, purple, pink person who wrote this article. ” See, it’s those damn purple people at it again.
