*MORE KATRINA DETAILS FROM MY PAL IN NEW ORLEANS…
my friend from new orleans called again, today. i wasn’t around but kerstin talked to him. turns out he and his were gonna STAY in their house in new orleans and wait the storm out. it wasn’t until they realized all their friends had left, did they decide to go to a shelter. this was a 15 minute decison they made when someone came by in a car and asked if they needed a ride to the shelter. they barely took anything..

the shelter they went to wouldn’t allow them to stay cuz they had a dog, so they were stuck..luckily, there were some folks in the parking lot who said they had a spare house far, far outside they city..they stayed there for a coupla days.

they’re presently staying at what they say is this really beautiful cabin out in the woods.. far away from the chaos that is katrina’s wrath. no cell phone signal. but mat had been sending out emails, letting folks know he and his are okay.

*I’M NOT SURE I’LL BE GOING TO NEW ORLEANS IN OCTOBER AFTER ALL..
but i will be coming to the MIDWEST in the first week in november..the twin cities/madison/chicago/cleveland/detroit…if you know of any non-bookstore venues, let me know..

*THE ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT DISASTERS LIKE THIS IS…
it brings out the best in people. sure, there are looters and ransacking and all that…but this is also when folks really step up and help out their fellow man. people helping people doesn’t make the provocative footage the newsmedia likes to show, but nonetheless, it is happening all around.

sure..i know that this week’s sojourner truth strip is kinda effed up. it’s a result of seeing a lot of effed up people acting the fool on public busses, lately.. i’ve been seeing so much that now i try to conjure up some sort of positive image, hence being reminded of sojourner truth.
